We’ve all had parents that spoke to us with very different methods. Within the confines of an intimate relationship, there’s an abundance of ways that we can communicate with one another. There’s the steely look from across the room, the ticklish and playful poke, and even varieties of tones that our parents all used to communicate with us. Every time we knew precisely what was being said, even when no words were actually spoken.
Father God - the ultimate parent - has a
smorgasbord of means to communicate with every one of his children. The Bible, the written word of God is the primary means that we hear the compassionate call of El Shaddai - but it isn’t his only means getting through to his kiddos.
• The Majesty of Nature
Have you ever looked out at the stars,
mountains, or ocean and only be able to utter a weak grunt? Being transfixed by the glory of our surroundings reminds us of the Great Mountain Maker and Mover in the Sky, and our lives.
• Dreams
Somewhere along the way we stopped believing that the God who spoke to Pharaoh, Gideon, Jacob, and even Father Abraham through dreams would ever speak to us the same way.
Sure, there’s a chance that dream you just had was the result of bad pizza - but it just as easily could be God getting your attention.
• Musical Melodies (and Harmonies)
There’s something about music that seems to operate on a higher plane than mere words could ever attain. God created music, and intended for it to be used in a variety of ways, not the least of which is to touch our hearts. When we raise our voices and sing, we aren’t the only ones singing - Psalms 22:3 ESV says “Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of your people.”
• Circumstances
Sometimes we’re trying to get through a door that’s been closed for a very good reason - going through it would hurt you. Just like your parents locked the door or gate, sometimes God will make it crystal clear that you aren’t supposed to waltz through door #1 or #2. When we
remember he’s all-knowing, we would be wise to take heed, and choose door #3.
• Through His Holy Spirit
We all have that thing deep inside of us that tries to get our attention. Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t Jiminy Cricket. Maybe it’s a still, small voice, or tiny radar that’s going beeping - but we all have it. That’s often the Holy Spirit trying to get
our attention to lead and guide us. The more we validate that voice, the more often we’ll hear it. If you are a child of the most high God, know one thing - He takes great pleasure in speaking to you. He will speak to you, He will speak to us, and we just have to get ears to hear. When we do, it changes everything.
